I think it is really important with so many buzzwords surrounding us to be very clear about the true definition of certain words.
A holistic approach means to provide support that looks at the whole person, not just their mental health needs. It is the physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being.
You can be super fit, but eat junk food daily and don’t prioritize nutrition. You can be very happy but a real couch potato…nothing wrong with it. However if we truly want to thrive we need to focus on all aspects of life. Balance is a word that gets lost and trust me I am very prone to ignore it, but it is key if we truly want a holistic lifestyle that is nurturing to our body and mind.
Here are some key guidelines that I implemented for a holistic lifestyle.
Number one and in my book something that I use to neglect, sleep. Our bodies need time to rest, heal and repair.
Living a grateful life. Prayer, meditation and journaling are all tools to help my spiritual and mental life.
Exercise daily. Even if it’s just for a short while. Choose something you love to do. I walk daily, do 30 minutes of yoga, rebound and go to the gym every second day. Obviously it keeps me fit, toned and is great for bone density. Most importantly it helps with a positive mentality, it de-stresses me and is overall a great way to relax.
Food, real unprocessed food. As a wholefood plant based vegan I focus on a diverse diet of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Legumes, beans and lots of sprouts. Fermented veg, like kimchi.
Liquid gold. I love matcha and espresso, but I keep it limited. Lukewarm water with fresh lemon is my prefered drink and staying hydrated is essential for our bodies and skin.
Me time… Reading a book, visiting an art gallery, going to a fabulous market. I take one day a week where I just pamper myself from head to toe. I love saunas, razuls, full body cocoons and massages. Find something you love that adds joy to your being. Focusing on yourself, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. We are worth it!
Positive mindset. I don’t own a TV, I rarely watch the news and I don’t Netflix and chill. I try to avoid negative news, although I am not oblivious about what is happening in the world. I decided long ago that I want to focus on the positive, the beautiful, the joy, the blessings.
Boundaries. Find and define your boundaries. It makes life so much easier. Let your no be no without an explanation.
Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. We all need to make changes to achieve it. Daily focused and responsible decisions and choices will have a huge impact on achieving the balance that we all need.
