Journaling is a wonderful way to scribble down all your thoughts, troubles and dreams. Prayer and meditation are key anchors of my life. It keeps me thankful, realising all the blessings that surround me.
In retrospect, living a life of thankfulness all starts by just realizing the smallest things. The roof over my head, the warm bed, the ability to still move around, the seasons that are changing, the owl hooting the distance. If you truly start reflecting on all the good things, then sometimes the bad things even have a silver lining.

Our minds are extremely powerful and if we consciously make a choice to focus on the positive, you will be surprised by how the negative can be seen more realistically.
I for one refuse to let the bad win. I refuse to fill my days with negative news, which I have no control over. I refuse to be blinded by things that are of no concern in my own life. My boundaries are clear and suddenly I see the blessings all around me.
Bad things happen daily and to some extent we have all had terrible experiences, but start small in seeing the good.
A few years ago I decided to do a whole year of thankfulness. I tried to think of 5 things to be thankful for each morning when I opened my eyes. Suddenly I realized that 5 should be 500 or more. To this day I still continue and everyday there is something new to be grateful for.
“When we lose one blessing, another is often most unexpectedly given in its place.”C.S. Lewis
